The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.
The pie charts compare the percentage of different languages spoken by British students at one university in England in the years 2000 and 2010.
Overall, Spanish was the most spoken language in addition to English in both years, with German being the least spoken one. The proportions for all languages changed only a bit over the period given.
As can be seen from the chart, in 2000, a third of all British students were able to speak Spanish, and the figure rose to 35% in 2010. The proportion of people who could speak another language also saw an increase from 15% in 2000 to 20% in 2010. Moreover, another rise could be seen in the percentage of students who were good at two other languages.
By contrast, at the beginning of the period, there were 15% of students proficient in French, but they accounted for only 10% 10 years later. The same is true for the figure of people who spoke no other language apart from English, dropping to 10% by 2010. By contrast, surprisingly, the population of German speakers remained constant at 10% throughout the period.
