The line graph illustrates the number of shop closures and openings from 2011 to 2018 in one country.
Except for 2011 and 2015, it is clear that the number of closed stores exceeds the number of new stores. Over a seven-year period, 2015 saw the lowest number of store closures.
The number of new store openings peaked at around 8,500 in 2011, before plummeting to around 3,900 the following year. After that, the number of shop openings had a two-year rise, which was up to 6,100. From 2015 to 2018, the number declined to 4,000 and remained relatively stable.
Compared to the openings, the shop closures had a much greater change over the whole 7-year period. There were about 6,300 shops that closed in 2011. Over the next two years, the number of shop closures exceeded the number of new shops by 2,000, and the gap closed in 2014. In 2015, there was a rational drop into 800, which remained flat for the next three years.
