Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and lecture are both about the appearance of Jane Austen. The author of the reading states that there are not many instances of how she looked like, the non professional sketch by her sister cassandra is thought to be her painting and later on painted by other professional artist is in existence. The lecturer disagrees. He mention the painting doesnot resemble her by any chance and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author of the reading begins by stating that several years after Austen demise her family had given her portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letter. Therefore, they recognized the painting as the portrait of the author and claim it. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that she was dead almost 70 years ago the authorizes date so the family who claimed the painting did not have seen Austen in real life.
Secondly, according to the writing the girl in the portrait is identical to Austen which means the attributes of girl in the painting is exactly matches with Austen like her nose, mouth, shape of body and so on. The speaker on other hand points out that although they are similar to some extent this might be bacause Austen had large family so the painting is suceptible to resemble one of her niece not Austen herself.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that even though the painting date is obscure the painting style linked with the artist could be afforded by merely affluent family like Austen. Furthermore, the artist was active in painting during the period when Austen was a teenage girl. The professor rebuts this argument. Her puts forth the idea that the stamp on the back of black canvas clearly depicts the syle of another artist. Moreover, he used to sketch in the period when Austen was in her late 20’s. Thus, this proves the painting of a teenage girl does not resemble Austen in any way.
As we can see, the author and lecturer shows conflicting views on the Austen appearance. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
