In any field—business, politics, education, government—those in power should be required to step down after five years.
The prompt asserts that the leaders who hold power shoule be required to abdicate after five years in the realm of buiness, politics, education, and government. From my perspective, I agree with the statement and believe that this approach would bring long-lasting prosperity.
Admittedly, keeping the power for a longer time is beneficial since the stability of power can guarantee the consistency of policies, which is undoubtedly a sigficant part in the overall healthy development of the institution or our society in general.
However, acknowleding the advantage of an abiding power does not change my stance that requiring those in power to step down after an arranged time holds more benefits thus should be the approach that we adopt. First and foremost, five years can be enough to realize a policy's goal, therefore requiring those in power to end serving would not harm the consistency of policies. In addition, it is widely admitted that competition stimulates development, and it also holds true when it comes to the people who are in power. When those in power are required to step down after five years, it opens the position for future candidates, therefore stimulates the competition between the potential future leaders.
People age, and more frequently than not, among those who are in power, there are more older people than younger ones. Older people are indeed generally more sophisticated and experienced, however, we must also admit that even though they still have the ability to make wise decisions in the last few years of their prime, with the growing of their age, the capabity to innovate is weakening as they are more and more confined to what they are familiar with. The healthy development needs young blood, not outmoded stereotypes from the past generation.
The statement made by the prompt concerns the essence of democracy. Democracy is what the modern society needs, not monarchy. One major differences among many between democracy and monarchy is that the leaders have to step away from the power when they end their service. The life-long serving might bring potential threats to democracy by placing one person's power superior. Take the example of George Washington, he insisted resigning after his service as president in order to entrench the republic, he was fully aware of how the extending power can impose a deadly threat to democracy.
In conclusion, I firmly supports the prompt's view that people should step down from power after five years since it conforms to the nature of democracy and presents more benefits.
