Overall, the average global price of both oil and food rose quickly over a period of 11 years and reached a peak of nearly 220 points for food and $130 per barrel for oil price respectively. Furthermore, the trends of both commodities were very similar and have correlation (93,6%).
We can see that, in 2000, the price index of food reach to nearly 85 points and the average oil price (per barrel) with the figure reaching over $20. Over the following four years the price of both food and oil remained stable, before increasing steadily from 2004 to 2007. By 2007, the average oil price had tripled, to nearly $60 per barrel, and food price had risen by around 50 points.
In the following years, there was experienced a dramatically increase both commodities within 1 year (2007-2008), with the number of oil prices reaching a peak of approximately $130 per barrel and the food price index going up 220 points. However, the prices of both categories dropped considerably, in 2009, hit a low of below $40 per barrel in oil price and the food price index was 140 points. The global price of both had fluctuated from 2009 to 2010 before recovering again, to nearly $100 per barrel, while the food price index reached its peak, at almost 240 points.
