The chart below shows the changes in car ownership in Great Britain between 1961 and 2001
The line chart depicts the variation in the percentage of car possessorship among the British populace from 1961 to 2001.
In general, the data reveals a considerable change in car ownership over the four decades. Car was a less popular household item in 1961 than it was in 2001. 65% of the populace had no car while the figure dropped significantly to just under 30% after 40 years.
During the initial two decades, spanning from 1961 to 1981, there was a notable surge in car ownership. The majority of British families possessed one car reached a peak at 50%. Concurrently, families that owned two or more cars accounted for 15%. In contrast to the substantially increasing number in car ownership, 1981 witnessed a sharp decrease in the percentage of households without cars by 30%.
The subsequent two decades, from the years 1981 to 2001, saw a continuous upward trend in the number of British households purchasing an additional car. Specifically, the proportion of families possessing two or more cars reached its peak at almost 30%, though families with only one car were still the majority, with 42%. Meanwhile, the percentage of households without a car steadily declined to less than 30% by the conclusion of 2001.
