Governments should place few if any restrictions on scientific research and development

Essay topics:

Governments should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development.

I mostly agree with the prompt for two reasons outlined below. Admittedly I do concede that certain scientific endeavours that might affect the fate of entire humanity, must be tightly regulated by the officials.

First of all, goverments should not place any restrictions on scientific research and development because it leads to development of technology that aids humans in a myriad of ways. For instance the invention of Aeroplane by the Wright Brothers completely changed the way people travelled, the distance between two places was of no significance and people living in one corner of the world could visit another corner of the world in a significantly less time. Moreover, the invention of telephone, is yet another archetype of technological marvel, that revolutionised how people communicated with each other. Similar to aircrafts this invention dissolved the limitation of physcial distance that stood in the way for commmunication to take place between distant people.
Such technological developements has completely revamped the lives of people to an extent where we have been so much reliant on these devices and technology that life without them is quite difficult to imagine and therefore curbing these development would be egregious.

Second of all, scientific research should not be hindered by the goverments because the it increases life expectancy of humans through medical advancements and technology. For instance, the development of vaccines such as the Covid-19 vaccines saved plenty of lives worldwide. Had there been restrictions on such pivotal reseach, many innnocent lives would have been lost and battling such deadly viruses would have been a daunting task.

However, I do concede that certain scientific endeavours must be monitored by the governments because they are of national importance and any mishap in such research would proove fatal to not only the nations but also for the entire world. For instance the Chernobyl Accident, a nuclear disaster in which a plethora of people lost their lives, was a dark moment in science as this situation would have not have taken place, if it were carefully monitored and its progress was check by the officials.

In conclusion, while there are only some events in which governent checks have proven to beneficial, a majority of technological advancements and medical research woould not have been possible if they were limited by the goverment
