"Some people believe that government officials must carry out the will of the people they serve. Others believe that officials should base their decisions on their own judgment."
Task: Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.
The governing of a people is as complex as it is seeming straightforword. One method along cannot solve the problems officials meet in the office. It is also for this same reason of diversified solutions that there are more than one official in the governemt. The first part of the prompt alludes to government officials doing what the people clamour about. I do mostly agree with this, as often, people ask for their basic right, which they shouldn't be reprimanded from exercising, this is on the premise that these requests are rational. I do however concede that people's request can be impossible to meet verbatim and must be reevaluated. In this case, the officials should base off these decisions on their own judgement, as long as these judgement is fair. I wil be addressing my stance in two main strategies.
Firstly, let's take democracy for instance. Democracy is thw government by the people, and for the people. Practicing this type of governance tells that officials should do what the people are infact requesting. What are these request? They are their basic rights, such as availability of clean water, availability of affordable energy, and even swearing in of a majorly voted official. The 2023 Presidential election in Nigeria saw the application of the opposite of what is said to be practiced, 'Democracy'. Peopel came out to exercise their rights as voters, the results were to be announced transparently. But what played out was far from Democracy. People were threaten to vote a particulate candidate against thier will, ballot boxes were stolen and altered, results were npt broadcasted fairly, and of course, the people for whom all these were done was sworn in. What was the result? Riots all over Nigeria ensured, shops were and businesses were runined, to say the least. Thus, in not adhering with the people's choice of vote, the very peace fabric of a Nation can be shred.
Secondly, in Nigeria, the people request for access to health amenities, which again is thier right. A lie is however told that '20 billion naira' has been scheduled for the building of good hospitals. Not long after, the same money is said to have been swallowed by snake (a riduculous story to play on the intelligence of the people). What was the resulting effec? Increased motality rate, people leaving the country for a better place, and a sick popolation
I do concede with the believe of other people however that government officials should make decisions based their judgement for this reason. Indeed, the people's choice might not be rational, might be meeting only immediate needs, or even be just personal. For example, in the case of Energy inavailability in Nigeria for example. Due to the consistency with no light, Nigerians have fallen to the state pf just wanting light, in whatever form and price, regardless of its effect to the environment. With the advent of climate change, the people still believe that this is the problem of the global north, and it doesn't concern or affect them. This shows how due to lack, people's wants can be irrational. In this situation, a true government official should not verbatim agree with these needs, but should rather think of ways to make energy accessible to all, and safe for the environment.
Conclusively, the needs of the people should infact be adhered to, but in providing this need, the method should be accessed for the best strategy in achieving and not just thinking of the immediate relief. It is thus the job of the officail to understand the people's wants, be transparent with them about how this would be met, and be futuristic about meeting it, and of course, doing it.
