Prompt: Some people believe that teaching morality should be the foundation of education. Others believe that teaching a foundation of logical reasoning would do more to produce a moral society.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented above.
The education of the brain in general, is a rather complex task. Research has proven that the best strategy of educating a person is in the building up of knowledge; Thus, hierarchical educational system is employed, hence why the educational system of the world is built this way. Morality, the basic desire of right or wrong is inborn, and it would be easier to build off this knowledge, rather than introducing a foreign concept from beginning; Therefore, I mostly disagree with the school of thought that logical reasoning should be foundational, rather than morality, and I do this for two main reasons. I concede though that logic has its ups, because of rational thinking, but the mostly disagree with the hierarchy of educational introduction.
Firstly, in educating, it is best, as scientifically proven, that knowledge that is familiar should be introduced first. This research, mostly recently embarked upon again by Dr Yang and Prof Gin from the University of Harvard, further corroborated that, for example as in the case of a young child, who is most concerned about the satisfaction of eating candy, or the pain of an injection, and not necessarily the reason behind immunisation or its importance, at this stage, the child just wants to know the difference between good and bad, right and wrong, sweet and bitter. On these very foundations are the tenets of morality built - the right thing to do for oneself, society, etc. Thus, introducing this first is easier to teach than logic, which at this stage is a foreign and more complex phenomenon.
Secondly, humans have been proven to be a very social species, with a high need for company and communication in other to define oneself, or goal; Like the Zulus say, 'I am because you are'. This defines the very basis threading fabric of a person. For example, in the quest for independence from subjugation experienced by several nations, this freedom was embarked upon for the purposes of one another living freely, and thus producing a fair society. In this fight for freedom, the very drive we have studied from history was employed is morality as a foundation and not logic - which might pick subjugation due to amenities enjoyed. For example, in South Africa, where we studied the struggles of Mandela in the fight for his people. He often referred to a better life, on their terms for everyone whenever he addressed the people. And this united the people.
However, I do concede that just knowing right and wrong, does not always pave a lasting way. The brain has been proven to embark upon a safe path due to past fears, however unreasonable that is. For example, the finance world, studies have shown that people who have suffered loss take less and less risk, which does not allow success or growth. Thus, logical reasoning would be best. Also, a child is known for his pr her foolishness at the nescence of life.
But, logic, tained.
