Nowadays, a growing number of people with health problems are trying alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting their usual doctor. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?
In recent years, the use of alternative medicines and therapies as a replacement of conventional treatments has become increasingly prevalent. This trend has both positive and negative aspects to consider and I believe the combination of the two approaches is the best solution.
On the positive side, alternative treatments bring certain long-term benefits. Most of them may have fewer side effects compared to conventional medications and treatments. In fact, some anecdotal evidence suggests that some herbal drinks and medicine such as ginger tea are typically effective in treating some flu symptoms, beneficial for those who are sensitive to pharmaceutical drugs. Additionally, alternative medicine often considers the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - rather than just focusing on specific symptoms or diseases. This holistic perspective can lead to a more comprehensive understanding of health and wellness, encouraging healthier lifestyle and more balanced diet, which in turn increases well-being and life fulfillment.
On the negative side, there exist some potential risks associated with this approach. Firstly, some individuals may choose alternative therapies over conventional medicine for acute medical problems such as accidental injury, potentially leading to more severe situations due to delays in effective treatment. In Vietnam, there have been such cases that patients have had to amputate their injured legs or arms because they chose to use herbal remedies instead of seeking immediate medical treatment. Another possible negative aspect is the disruption of doctor-patient relationships. Patients who pursue alternative methods may become skeptical of conventional healthcare providers, potentially damaging the trust and communication essential for effective medical care. This worsens the existing health conditions and in some cases, threatens patients’ lives.
In conclusion, while alternative methods can limit some adverse effects and raise individuals’ health awareness, the improper application of these therapies can result in severe health consequences. I believe the best option is to use alternative treatments to support and complement conventional medicine.
