jet streams and its effect on air travel
The jet streams may be defined as a river of wind which flows between six to nine miles above the earth's crust which is generally the upper part of the troposphere. This portion of the troposhphere layer corresponds to the weather changes of a specific region. For any stream of air to be categorised as jet stream needs to have speed more than 57 miles per hour. Generally, average core speed of the jet stream is nearly 190 miles per hour and in winters the speed of the jet streams are greater than 300 miles per hour because in winters, the temperature difference between the atmosphere and the surface is larger as compared to the summers.
According to the lecture, jet streams affect air travel to a great extent. The speed of the jet stream either contributes to the speed of the plane or hinders it. For example, if a plane is travelling in the direction of the jet stream, then the tail stream provides extra push to the plane which helps the plane to move at a faster speed and consequently, the plane takes less time to reach the destination. On the other hand, if a plane is moving in opposite direction of the jet stream, it takes more time and fuel to travel the same distance.
