The line graph indicates how many people aged 65 and over in three different nations namely USA, Sweden and Japan during 6 decades from 1940 to 2000 and give predictions for 2020 and 2040.
Overall, the proportion of elderly people in USA and Sweden increased rapidly between 1940 and 2000, whilst, that in Japan just fluctuated slightly over the same period. However, it is estimated that Japan will experience the fastest growth in the numbers of old people and surpass the statistics of USA and Sweden by 2040.
In 1940, 5% of the population in Japan was more than 65 years old. Higher than than that was the proportions in Sweden and USA – with 7% and 10% of people were more than 65 years old respectively .Those 2 figures both grew up to 15% in the next 60 years. Following the reverse pattern, Japan witnessed a slight decrease and then recovered to more than 6% by 2000.
By 2040, a dramatic growth to more than 27% is predicted for Japan. Meanwhil, the figures of USA and Sweden might be a little bit lower at under 25%.
