A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college
According to me, a nation should not enforce a fixed curriculum on the each and every student. Different curriculums offer diversity to students to develop themselves according to a particular system.
Many would argue that a fixed national curriculum would ensure high standards in education and the cream of students that "top" the country's yearly examinations would certainly go onto become leaders and top ranking professionals of the future. However, take the example of the second most populated country in the world, India. In India, there are multiple curriculums varying between different states but there is also a national curriculum, namely NCERT, but in the end it is the choice of the school to choose and follow the curriculum they see fit. The country, even though not the highest ranked in the world in terms of quality of education, churns out probably the highest number of brilliant individuals yearly and not all of them were toppers or high achieving individuals. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft wasn't the topper of his curriculum, he was an average student.
While i disagree with the statement, i can't help but also agree that it does have some benefits like easier upgradation of syllabus i.e in today's rapidly changing world, it is imperative that the curriculum taught to the student remains relevant. This revising of syllabus would be relatively easier if a country had one national curriculum. But i feel, this argument is somewhat weak as it doesn't speak as much in favour of the system as it does against the laziness of the people that control the curriculum. If the people handling the syllabus of curriculum are pragmatic and proactive, i believe it isn't difficult to revise the syllabus of multiple curriculums in the country.
Another argument in favour of different curriculums, especially for countries historically rich in diversity, is that these curriculums are often tailor-made for different regions of the nation and hence the values and education that is taught aligns much more with the ideology of people that live their and hence easier to comprehend and understand. However, if taken to extreme, this could also lead to education that diverts from reality and might become redundant when the student goes to college in the future. But, i fell this can be moderated and a check should be maintained that no curriculum distorts facts just to make the people of that region feel good about themselves. A good example of this is, students in Pakistan used to be taught about the independence of their nation differently than what actually happened during the partition of 1947.
To conclude, i think it all boils down to the fact that different curriculums breed diversity and freedom of choice and hence are better suited.
