The reading and the lecture are both about rapid decline of sea otter. Whereas the author of the reading states that pollution is the major cause of reduction in population of sea otter, the lecture suggests that predation is most likely factor contributing to decline in number of sea otter. The lecture casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to reading, pollutants taken from the water sample provide evidence for the pollution theory. However, the lecture disputes this point. He posits that if reduction in the number of sea otter due to the pollutants in water, the would have been found on shores. Furthermore, he mentions that absence of the sea otters on shores indicates the sea otter were killed and eaten by predator.
Secondly, The reading explains that pollution also decrease other sea animal with the sea otter in the same area. Nevertheless, the lecture refutes this argument. He argues that because the whale population decreased, the orca had to eat otter instead of whales. As a result the otter population diminished.
Finally, the reading claims that environmental factors, which led to different level of pollutant concentration, perfectly explains uneven pattern of sea otter population. On the other hand, the lecture believe that generally orca preys large whale but otter population is decrease where orca present and number of sea otter are stable where orca absence. Moreover, he feels that the uneven patter of sea otter population is due to predation.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about hypothesis of decline of sea otter. The three main points made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecture.
