TPO-46 - Integrated Writing Task
In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper.
The Reading and the lecture are both about the adoption of electronic databases for medical information, which is an innovative way to store medical papers. The author believes that this new technology will benefit doctors and patients with many advantages. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. She considers that there are no assertions about the benefits of this new electronic databases.
First, the author comes up with the idea that electronic records could decrease some costs. It is mentioned that transportation will be much cheaper, and there will be more space for more important papers. However, the professor argues that there will not a significant change with this, because doctors will keep printing large amounts of certificates as a legal resources. She suggests that also doctor will be still using printed papers.
Second, the author states that medical error could be reduced with this measure. The article notes that the doctor’s handwriting is not always understandable, as a result, legibility will be an advantage. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument by pointing out that there still will be errors. She highlights that the doctors’ staff will copy the information from the medical paper, consequently, there will be misinterpretations.
Finally, the author contends that these databases records will help the doctor and patients to get the information out of the databases whenever it will be necessary. The professor, on the other hand, posits that the access will be difficult because of the legal’ constraints. She puts forth the conception that the process to take off some documents will be more complicated.
In short, the professor refuses the author opinion by showing some examples about the disadvantages of electronic databases.
