Are Dinosaurs endothermic or not?
The reading passage and the lecture diverge on the idea that dinausors should be considered as endotherm animals. Endotherms are animals that maintain a constant internal temperature of 37 Celcius degree no matter the environment they are in.
The reading passage states that dinosaurs are endotherms because their fossils have been discovered in polar regions. The author assumed that the existence of fossils proves that they had lived there. Therefore, they are able to maintain a constant body temperature in cold climate. The professor casts doubts on this idea by suggesting that during the dinosaur life period, polar region were warmer. Thus, it is obvious that dinosaurs could live there being endothermic animals or not.
The author claims that the leg position and the movement of dinosaurs proves that they are endotherms. In fact, the author based on the fact that all endotherms have their legs underneath their bodies to make the previous claim. The professor counters this by arguing that the leg position of dinosaurs, only shows that they are able to support more weight, and that is the reason why they are large.
The reading passage states that the bone structure of dinosaurs proves their endothermic character because they contains bones filled with Haversian canals. In fact, the author wrote that these canals allow the dinosaurs to grow quickly, which is one feature of endotherms. The professor counter argues by providing evidence that the study of dinosaurs' bones shows that dinosaurs stopped growing in cold periods. Consequently, they are not endotherms because endotherms would continue to grow in cold period because of their constant body temperature.
