According to the reading passage, archaeologists found a European silver coin in 1957. The coin is dating back to the eleventh century. Many people think that the coin had belonged to the European explorer, Norse, who visited North America in about a thousand years ago. The author explains that the archaeologists don’t believe this story on account of three reasons. However, the professor opposes all of them.
First, the author mentions that the coin was discovered in a site far away from the Norse's settlements in Canada. The professor clarifies that although Norse stood in Canada as the American natives always traveled in large distances, the coin presumably had released in one of their trips. So, with the proposed explanation, we can imply that the evidence is true.
Second, the reading passage describes that there weren’t other similar coins to corroborate that Norse had visited the American natives. However, the professor refutes this assertion. She states it is probable that the other coins came back to Europe by the explorers and only one of them had remained in North America.
Finally, the professor and author both confirm that the native people didn’t use the silver coin as money. Nevertheless, the professor believes that in contrast with the reading passage the Americans’ native may have used those coins as the jewelry. He argues that the natives liked unusual and beautiful staffs such as a silver coin to implement them in their jewelry.
In brief, the professor and author give the contradicting ideas about the possibility of the historic presence of the silver coins in North America. The professor asserts that the all the evidence seem authentic and none of the reasons discussed in the reading passage are convincing.
