Both the passage and the lecture materials discuss the populations of yellow cedar which is a kind of tree known in North America. To be more specific, the passage states that the populations of the yellow cedar trees are decreasing, and holds different ideas and thinks to support his arguments, whereas the lecture refutes every idea mentioned in the passage and says them unconvincing.
To begin with, the passage starts its argument by stating that the cedar bark bettle, sort of insects, attack the trees causing their death and as a result, decreases their population. However, the professor in the lecture disagrees with this notion claiming that healthy trees produce poisonous substances to kill insects and protect themselves. Indeed, the bettles can not attack the healthy trees, but when they becomes sick, the insects can attack them easily.
Another reason of decrease the population of cedar trees mentioned in the lecture is the clown of the bark caused by the brown bears. In contrary, the lecturer states that thos notion is groundless because trees in North America have been clawn even though there are no brown bears in there.
While the passage finishes its arguments by claiming that the changes in the climate can play a role in the dying of the trees as the roots of the trees begin to grow in the early winter instead of late spring, and as a result, the roots becomes so sensitive to the cold and die.whereas, the lecturer refutes this argument saying that most of the trees that died in cold weather have roots more sensitive than usual, and that is why the trees died and the weather has no relation to that.
