To begin with, the passage basically explains about possibilities of early animals to be larger than now providing three reasons. Meanwhile, the lecture disagrees with the passage, and claims that the reasonings given are impossible to verify and are somewhat contradictory.
Firstly, the passage avers that in the early earth, there used to be greater amount of oxygen supply which directly stimulated the growth of larger animals. In contrast, the lecture contends the fact that there used to be number of volcanic eruptions. This might have released a lot of harmful gases resulting in less amount of oxygen due to which it might be harder for animals to breathe. Thus, the first reason given by passage was proven to be absurd by the lecture.
Secondly, it is affirmed that there were abundant plants which provided plenty nutrition for animals to grow rapidly. While, the lecture casts doubt on it saying though there were vast amount of plants, they lagged nutrition. It also included the fact that early fossil study has confirmed it. Therefore, the second reason was ruled out by the lecture.
Thirdly, the passage has explained the earth's warm climate as the support for the growth of larger animals. Because of the warm climate, animals did not need to spend energies for warming themselves instead they used their extra energies to generate cells. This might have passed on to the generations. Whereas, the lecture talks about the disadvantages of warm climate which could not be supportive of animal growth. As the animals took off too much of heat inside, they needed to cool off their bodies to maintain temperature within. So, it would have been difficult for them to survive in such climate. Hence, the third reason of the passage is ruled out by the lecture.
