The article explains three hypothesis for decline in Yellow Cedar population. However, the professor, in the lecture, confutes each of the claims by author. He says that the reason provided by article is inadequate.
First, passage claims that beetle, insect parasite, are responsible for decrease of Yellow cedar population. The professor refutes it by saying that it's healthy population are resistant than other plants found around that area. Trees bark and seeds produce poisonous chemical substances, which inhibits the beetles from eating them. Further, he states that the beetle attacks recorded on unhealthy and week trees, which would die anyway.
Second, the article posits that brown bears leads to reduction in Yellow cedar population. The professor, however, asserts that it is not attributed for decline of trees all over the area. According to professor, the trees are present in mainland and island on the North Coast of north America, places with and without bear, but there is decline of trees on the island, place without bear.
Third, the passage maintains that change is temperature may lead to population reduction. The professor counter the author's point by explaining that the trees located on higher altitude than are unaffected by the freezing. Further, we knew that the Yellow cedar resides on low altitude and warm temperature but it population is decreasing, but others plant, which grew on high altitude and cold climate, are not affected by temperature.
