The reading passage and the lecture are both about on the population of the trees's species, namely yellow cedar and it's available generation in United States frequently. The author of the article explains that, there is decreasing ratio of the yellow cedar trees, heavily researches by the advance scientist. While, the professor casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He states that, there is no such specific evidence for this declining issue.
Firstly, the passage describes that, the parasites effect on these trees extremely killing the entire population, obviously, cedar bark is depending on yellow cedar for feeding. In turn, the lecturer says that, the new species of this tree is restricted these insects by developing the chemical around their branches on to the leaves directly.
Secondly, the author contends that, animals mainly, brown bears, distorting their barks and branches by using own nails, to get the nutrition from them. Contrary to this, the speaker rebuts this argument, he thinks that, yellow bark growing on the islands, despite the forest, where these bears are generally existing, so no bears found on the shores, so how cedar trees may in get in danger by brown bears.
Lastly, the article suggests that, the climatic reasons also favor the declining these trees, because it is estimated by studies that, in icy temperature, their roots freeze and could not be able to trap food by the soil. On the other hand, the professor posits that, there are numerous research present today, which explains that, the colder environment are more suitable for the plants rather than warmer, because at warm temperature, the it died off.
