Tidal Powers

Essay topics:

Tidal Powers

The reading and lecture both discuss 'Tidal Powers'. The reading states that tidal power can be used as a better alternative source of energy. However, the professor explains that the use of tidal powers as a possible alternative energy should be considered critically.
First of all, the passage mentions that tidal power can contribute in generation of electricity. However, the professor points that this electricity that is generated can only be used to meet fraction of total need of the country due to its location. Moreover, she says that it would not be wise to threaten the environment for generation of only small amount of energy.
In addition, the lecture also points out that the barrage and dams mentioned in the reading can disturb several migratory fishes to migrate between sea and river. Furthermore, the professor also counters the possible argument of making a barrage that allows fishes to migrate claiming that it would be very expensive to do so.
Also, the professor mentions that the quality of water in estuary area would decline as the salinity is increased due to sea water. She also adds that the entire inter tidal habitat would be in danger. According to professor, humans might also have problem with the plan of generating electricity using tidal energy. She says that the fishing boats that the people use are suited for the rivers and they would not be able to navigate properly in open sea. The professor therefore explains that this would hamper the economy and trade of the region as well.
