To begin with, on the premise of given time period, in terms of total number of jobless people the US was significantly ahead of Japan (7% vs. 2.5%). From that time on, the amount of unemployed people started to go down gradually and bottomed out in 1998 when the percentages of the unemployed reached to 5% of the whole work force of the country. On the contrary, in Japan joblessness figures went up considerably and hit its peak doubling in 1998 when it met with the figure for the USA.
When it comes to the final year, to be more precise, the year of 1999, both countries almost preserved their unemployment levels at around 5%.
To sum it up, although unemployment problem decreased in essence in the US, it experienced upward trend in Japan.
