The reading claims that ethanol fuel cannot be considered as a suitable alternative to gasoline. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that ethanol fuel is not able to address the significant problem of global warming due to the carbon dioxide produced by gasoline. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the process of growing plants from which ethanol fuel is made will contract the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. In fact, plants absorb carbon dioxide and remove it from the atmosphere.
Furthermore, the reading p
assage holds the view that large-scale production of ethanol fuel will reduce the amounts of plants which animals feed on them. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that, ethanol fuel is produced from parts of plants consist of cellulose and are not eaten by animals. As a result, ethanol fuel will not have any harmful effect on the amounts of available plants for animals.
Finally, the reading asserts that ethanol fuel is more costly compared to gasoline particularly without the support of the United States government. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that more production of ethanol fuel, more decrease in its cost. In this regard, the government should not cut its support so that they can produce more fuel, increase the number of consumers, and cause a drop in its price. According to the recent studies, in the future, the amounts of ethanol fuel will be three times greater, and its price would be forty percent less than now.
