TPO 44-Suspicious coins
The lecture and the passage discuss the origin of some coins which have been discovered in the Maine state of United States. Although the passage claims that there are three reasons that archaeologists believe these coins have been placed there to misleading people and they are not placed by Norse, the speaker refutes these ideas through a number of reason which will be described in this report.
First of all, the passage points out that the distance of the Maine is so far from the Norse settlement; therefore, they could not brought these coins to such a far location. The speaker, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that many other objects have been found far from their original places. She also states that Norse were travelling long distances; thus, they could have reach this location during their explorations.
Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that since other investigations have not been found any other coins in this archaelogical site, the Norse could not bring them to this place; the speaker argues that the Norse did not want to create any settlements there so they packed their valuable sttufs like coins for the explorations. Have explored this site, Norse brought the coins back with themselves.
Finally, although the passage says that since the currency of the Europe was not familiar for the Norse, they could not perceive the value of these coins and they thought these are useless, the professor disagrees by mentioning that although it is true that they might not understand these coins as money, they could exploite them either as a valuable thing for their trades or jwelery due to the reason that these coins were beautiful.
