Tidal Power
The given set of materials is about the tidal energy, which is the renewable source of electricity which can be generated trapping the sea tides into a dam and barrage then rotating the turbines when the water discharge out. The reading passage decribes how electricity can be generated while the lecturer casts doubts by pointing out its disadvantages on local economy, environment and habitat.
Firstly, the lecturer opposes that tidal power can never do more than just a fraction of energy demand although it can contribute in the small region.
Secondly, the lecturer posists that with the use of sea water the local wildlife could be destroyed. As the sea water has high salinity, the mixing of sea water with estacuary could affect the habitat for fish and birds. Similarly, the migratory fish that needs to migrate from fresh water to sea will be hampered due to barrage. Although some provisions could be build but it will make the design more expensive.
Lastly, the lecturer casts doubts of its implication on local economy. The fishing boats will be suffered as they no longer can navigate. Even, the economy of the local people will be reduced.
Thus, the lecturer effectively casts doubts on the use of tidal energy as alternative source of generating electricity.
