Emperor penguins are not only the largest species of penguin in the world but also one of the most unique. They are very social, living in colonies that can include hundreds of thousands of individuals. Nevertheless, emperor penguins are monogamous. Having selected a mate, emperor penguins remain faithful to each other for life, using vocal calls to find one another when they return to their breeding site on the compacted ice of the Antarctic continent. It is believed that different frequencies alert mates to the sound of their partner’s call.
the passage and lecture are both about the main information of emperor penguins. the reading brings up three main features of this species while the speaker disproves all of these points by using the new-dated print of the information.
First of all, The author of the passage believes that emperor penguins choose a mate which is the characteristic of monogamous animal and moreover they are really faithful to their partner by using the vocal calls to return to the breeding site. while the professor opposes this idea by stating that by her great observation, it is uncertain that whether emperor penguins are monogamous or not because if the breeding site is untimely located, the penguins won't look for another penguin as well.
Secondly, the author posits that by using a rookery could track back to where they have hatched which is the loyalty of penguin, as a result of this practice, their colonies has enlarged. but the professor refutes that according to the satellite image in every year, nest loyalty can be disproved owning to having some new local places which could contribute to the disappearance of some birds.
Finally, as the author claims that this penguin is not considered endangered and protected by international law as the evidence shown that the number of this species is still stable. but the professor disagrees this point because due to harsh environmental condition could melt the ice and it adversely affects to marine living as well. So it is must-thing to put emperor penguin in the list of endangered animals.
