The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000.
The table illustrates how long every British person traveled from 1985 to 2000 by different travel modes: Walking, Bicycle, Car, Local bus, Long distance bus, Train, Taxi, and Other. Overall, it is clear that the average distance in all modes presented an increase from 4740 miles in 1985 to 6475 miles in 2000.
Starting with car, long distance bus, train, taxi and other, there was a growth in the average distance during the fifteen years. In 1985, car, at 3199 miles, traveled far longer than any other mode. Then, its miles rose to 4806 miles in 2000, which still remained the longest distance. The same trend can also be seen in other (450—585 miles), train (289—366 miles) and long distance bus (54—124 miles). The miles that taxi traveled, always the shortest distance during, increased most slightly from 13 miles to 42 miles.
Turning now to the rest modes, however, the miles declined over the period of 15 years. The distance that local bus traveled experienced a decrease from 429 miles to 274 miles, which was the most dramatic decline.
