Since current student are making the future of our societies, alternative forms and approaches in their education framework has always been of utmost importance for authorities, policy makers and also parents. One germane question in this field is: is it more important to provide student concepts and ideas or teach them about facts and reality? Although teaching facts might be more useful in a pragmatist point of view, I believe that understanding ideas and concepts as well as generalization skill is more practical and useful.
The first aspect that deserves to be pointed out is that it is more practical to learn about the concepts rather than facts. Science is expanding rapidly; therefore, it takes unreasonably along time to discuss and learn about the facts in all branches of science. In contrast, it is more practical to learn about brief and succint ideas of a topic rather than going into details of several fact concerning that topic.
Apart from the point that I made about the practicality of learning concepts, one cannot overlook the fact that if students are taught the ability to generalize concepts to various applications, they will be able to derive facts of a specific topic, by only knowing general concepts of that topic. Therefore, by only limited amount of knowledge about a topic, they can obtain knowledge about details of the topic. Hence, this approach is time efficient, too.
Another point that deserves a word is that learning concepts helps intellectual abilities of the student grow stronger. Learning concepts and general rules of a scientific topic gives them perspictive view of the issue at hand. Therefore, students are trained to view the problems from a perspective from above rather than getting lost in details. Hence, their problem-solving skill enhances.
In a word, owing to the elucidations and causes mentioned in the previous paragraphs, it appears logical to draw the well founded conclusion that teaching student about ideas and concepts is not only more practical and time efficient, it also helps student to own better problem-solving skill.
