The reading passage discusses the reasons why it is impossible to maintain a human presence on Venus. However, the lecturer disagrees with the passage. He claims that a floating station 50 kilometers above the Venus surface is definitely practical.
The reading first points out that the atmospheric pressure on Venus' surface is too great for even machines to handle, let alone humans. Yet a simple design is able to go around this obstacle. the professor argues that The atmospheric pressure decreases as one raises higher into the atmosphere. If the station is built 50 kilometers above the Venus surface, it is able to reduce the atmospheric pressure to the level of Earth's surface - a point that ordinary humans can handle.
The second reason given by the reading passage is the lack of water on Venus. There are no reservoirs of water on the Venusian surface and its atmosphere is made out of Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, and Sulfuric Acid. However, the lecturer points out that with the Hydrogen in Sulfuric Acid and the Oxygen in Carbon Dioxide, scientists are able to synthesize water out of them, therefore not needing to supply water from the earth.
The last problem proposed in the reading passage is the lack of electricity. Due to the hyper-reflective property of the Venusian atmosphere and cloud, it is hard to gather enough sunlight to generate enough electricity on the surface of Venus. Yet in the floating station design, the problem could be solved. It would be well above the thick clouds, so the 60 percent of the sunlight that passes through is well used. The station is able to collect sunlight not only from above but also from below where it is reflected by the thick Carbon Dioxide cloud. This way, the station is able to produce enough electricity of its daily usage.
