TPO-42

The reading passage discusses the three possible ways to prevent bird injuries caused by transparent glass windows. Yet the lecturer claims that all of them are ineffective.

The first solution provided by the reading is to replace the regular clear glass with one-way glass. The windows with this type of glass allow the occupants to see out yet blocking the view of the birds. Although it sounds like a decent plan, the lecturer disagrees with it. He claims that the one-way glass is just as harmful to the birds as the regular ones. From outside, the one-way glass is like a mirror that reflects from outside. It then creates a reflection of trees or the sky. The birds cannot differentiate between the reflections and the real objects, thus flying towards the one-way glass.

The reading then comes up with a second solution, which was to paint colorful designs on to the glass. These colored patterns would then inform the birds about the danger ahead while allowing the light through the openings. However, the lecturer points out the flaws in the listening. When a bird sees an empty space in the pattern, it would think that it is a hole and try to fly through it. Yet if the openings are smaller than a bird, it would also not let much light through.

The last solution proposed by the author of the reading is to construct an artificial magnetic field that emits magnetic signals to steer the birds away. Yet it also has its weakness. The lecturer claims that the birds only direct themselves with the earth’s electromagnetic during long distance travels. In short distance voyages, the birds tend to use their eyes and the shift in wind to direct themselves, leaving the artificial magnetic field useless.
