The diagrams below show the life cycle of the silkworm and the stages in the production of silk cloth.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given images illustrate a silkworm’s lifecycle and how silk cloth is made using a cocoon.
Both the processes have 5 stages, however, silkworm’s lifecycle occurs naturally and is a cyclic process whereas, production of silk cloth is a man-made process.
The entire lifecycle of a silkworm is about 11 weeks. At the initial stage, silkworm emerges from the eggs of moth. They consume mulberry leaves for 4 to 6 weeks and then wrap themselves with cocoon made up of silk. The cocoon remains idle for 16 days and then moth emerges from it.
However, for silk cloth, the main ingredient is a cocoon. Firstly, the cocoon is inspected for quality purpose and then sent for production. The cocoon is soaked in hot water and then unwinding of the cocoon happens. An average cocoon can unwind from 300 to 900 metres, however, after unwinding the threads are twisted and soaked into dye based on the colour requirements. The coloured threads are then sent for weaving in order to produce cloth.
