Overall, it is clear that in both years, 2003 and 2008, the most popular film genre was thriller, despite its dramatic decline, whilst comedy was the last public’s option, remaining at almost 5% of the total number of oscar winners.
In more detail, in 2003 thriller represented about half of the total percentage (approximately 46%), but after that the number fell dramatically to almost 35%. similarly, Horror decreased by almost 5% over the five years period, from 13% to approximately 8%. On the other hand, Action recorded a dramatic growth from 17% to 21%. In the same way, Science Fiction almost doubled its percentage in this period, reaching about 16% in 2008.
In contrast, the other three film genres, comedy, Romance and Documentary remained approximately the same in both years, increasing slightly only by 1-2%.
