In recent years , many small local shops have closed because customers travel to large shopping centers or malls to do their shopping.
Is this a positive or negative development ?
As incomes are growing, so is the consumption of goods across India. Though earlier people used to buy most of these from local shops, now they have started purchasing from shopping malls or supermarkets. We will discuss in this essay why this shift is advantageous for society as a whole over some of the disadvantages it brings.
As purchasing patterns change, it certainly has negative impact on some parties more than the others. Firstly, the sporadic increase in number of shopping malls in a matter of few years, has led to many shops which were in business since generations to shut down in a matter of time. This makes it very difficult for their family as in many cases this is the only source of their income and the head of the family doesn’t have any other skill for alternative business or employment. Secondly, these shops are usually located very near to the house and people may even send their children to buy some of the small things. So, it is very quick to purchase any item which is required, whereas now one has to properly plan for going to shop.
But the advantages of large shopping centers are plenty, especially for the consumers. Now they get all the household stuff they want under one roof including groceries, clothes, fashion accessories, etc. Families now plan their visit once or twice a month and can buy goods in bulk which easily runs for the remainder period till the next visit is planned. Also, as these shopping centers are huge, their bargaining power with companies is also higher which ultimately leads to lower prices for consumers through various discounts. Even for the brands it is more efficient now as they have to deliver at fewer areas where these stores are located thus reducing delivery costs.
We have explained both the positive aspects like convenience and reduced prices for consumer, as well as some of the negative ones like no alternative source of income for shop owners and the swiftness with which things could be purchased. Considering the above, I believe this transition is overall beneficial for the society.
