Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage about dinasour are endothermic.
The article states that dinosaurs were endotherms as they differ from modern reptiles in many ways and provides three reasons to support it. However, the professor explains that some scientist believes that those reasons do not prove that they are endotherms and challenges each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that dinosaur's fossils are discovered in Polar Regions and only endothermic animals could be active in cold climates. The professor refutes this point by stating that polar regions at that time were warm enough that non-endothermic animals could also survive. She also states that they could have migrated to some warmer place or hibernated during cold weather. As a result, fossils discovered in polar region does not prove that they were endotherms.
Second, the article claims that physiology like leg position and movement and endothermy are connected as all modern endotherms have their legs underneath the body, and so were the legs of dinosaurs. However, the speaker contends that animals need high energy for running. Additionally, she also said that leg position of dinosaur supports more weights as a result, they can grow larger. Therefore, there is no need of endothermy for running.
Third, the reading avers that Haversian canals in bone are found in fossils of dinosaur and they are strong indicator of endothermy. The lecturer accepted that they do have presence of Haversian canals, but they also have growth rings which result in thickening of skin. But during cold, growth rings stop growing or grow very slowly. Periodic growth like rapid growth followed by weak growth and again followed by rapid growth are not the characteristics of endothermic animals. They grew at a constant rate even in cold temperature. Consequently, dinosaurs are not endothermic.
