summarize the points made in the lecture about Chevalier's memoir and its accuracy, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading about Chevalier's memoir.
The reading discusses about a memoir and its accuracy which mainly describes Chevalier's life during 18 century. However, the professor in the lecture disagrees with these statements regarding Chevalier memoir's inaccuracy. She provides three reasons to refute each of the assumptions made in the reading section.
First, the article states that Chevalier was not as rich as it was presented in the memoir and he had gambling issues and sometimes he would need to borrow money from other merchants. But, the professor opposes with this view and reminds that Chevalier was a wealthy man and most of his wealth was in other forms rather than cash. Therefore, he had to borrow money for his immediate need until he could sell some of his assets to raise some money.
Second, the passage explains that the recording of conversations between Voltaire and Chevalier is problematic, since they were generally written many years later. On the other hand, professor demonstrates that these writings are pretty accurate, because plenty of witnesses confirm their authenticity and mention that he wrote almost everything that he remembered from the meetings with Chevalier.
Third, the reading regards that Chevalier's escape from prison could not be true. They believe that the Venice prison was so sophisticated for escape and no other prisoners had escaped from the prison before his escape time. In contrast, professor illustrates in her lecture that he was clever enough to plan his escape from the prison. Moreover, the prison authorities repaired the ceiling of his cell after his escape which shows the evident flaws in the prison's infrastructure system and confirms his successful escape from Venice prison.
