The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The chart manifests the fraction of people who own their places of living versus those who are staying in rented domiciles across England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. In a nutshell, the percentage of households who stay in their own accommodation has increased from 1918 to 2011, whereas the fraction of households who use rented domiciles shows a decline in the same period.
First, the households who live in rented housing decreased from 78 percent in 1918 down to about 37 percent in 2011. In all the years of this period, the trend was decreasing, except for 1953 when it remained at the same percentage as 1939, and for 2011, when it increased to 37 percent from a 31 percent in 2001.
Next, the percentage of people who owned their housing has risen from 23 percent in 1918 to 63 percent in 2011. Although the percentage of households who possessed their accommodation remained the same from 1939 to 1953, and diminished from 69 percent in 2001 to 63 percent in 2011, the general trend was rising.
Finally, at the beginning of the period in 1918, the percentage of renting households was 56 percent more than owning ones. The decreasing trend of buying households led to an equal 50 percent amount in 1971. Continuing this procedure led to a 26 percent higher percentage of those who own their housing with respect to those who live in rented domiciles at the end of the period in 2011.
