The following question comes from Cambridge IELTS book 6, page 30.
The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The line graph portrays data about how much water was consumed globally in the period between 1900 and 2000 while the table indicates figure for water use in Brazil and Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000. On the whole, there was a significant growth in using water in Agriculture, Industrial and domestic sectors over a 100-year period whereas between 2 countries, the amount of water in Brazil is higher than Congo’s.
It is clear from that graph that the highest amount of water consumption was in Agriculture (500 km3 in 1900 and 3000 km3 in 2000). The water consumption of Industrial sector took the second place during 100 years from 1900 to 2000 (1 km3 and 1000 km3 respectively). The water use of domestic field accounted for the lowest proportion with 0.5 km3 in 1900 and 300 km3 in 2000.
It can be seen from the table that the population of Brazil was higher than that of Congo (176 million and 5.2 million people respectively). Similarly, in terms of irrigated land, Brazil took the figure of 26500 km2 which was bigger than 100 km2 area of Congo. This trend continued in water consumption of each person in 2000, Brazil consumed 395 m3 of water per people in comparison with the figure of Congo (8m3 per head).
