The line graph illustrates the use of three different types of spreads from year 1981 to 2007.
Overall, the consumption of margarine and butter shrunk with advancing years, whereas the usage of low fat and reduced spreads showed variable pattern. The unit used is grams.
In 1981, just above 140 grams of butter was being consumed but it rose sharply to approximately 160 grams in 1986; when butter became the most popular spread. Conversely, only 90 grams margarine was used in 1981 and it had further reduced to 80 grams by 1986. After this year, butter usage showed steady fall ever year, reaching up to only 50 grams in 2007. However, margarine started experiencing a drop in 1996 and by the end of time, only 40 grams of it was being eaten.
In sharp contrast to this, low fat and reduced spreads came in food industry in 1996 and started from 10 grams of consumption. However, this rapidly increased every year and by 2001, the use of low fat products had become 80 grams. In next years, the trend changed and a slight fall was observed, reducing it up to 70 grams only.
