In the lecture, speaker argues with all the reasons provided in the text in favor of electronic medical record in United state.
She states that all the advantages claimed in the reading are uncertain.
First, although the reading claimed the electronic record reduce the cost, professor argues with that. She states that the reduction of cost is not significant and not lead to any saving. She illustrates that most physician still keep the paper record for their reference and some records need to have signature. Therefore, cost of storage and space as well as paper record do not eliminate by having electronic record.
Also, the text claimed that electronic record prevent from error of handwriting and improper data. However, the lecturer states that it does not eliminate the erros as physicians use pen and pencil and their handwritting by their hand and the staff usually is in charge of transfering the data to the computer. Therefore, error in handwriting and data would be still an issue in this regard.
Lastly, the speaker refutes the text point about aiding in research. She states that this not nessessarily happens. Medical record in US has a very strict rule and difficult to access because of strict privacy laws in place. A patient can block the use of their data for medical research. For running a research there are lots of rules in place and following them and obtaining many permitted data needs lots of work. Therefore, research might not become easier.
