The reading and the lecture are both the presence of life on planet Venus. The author of the text feels that extreme and inhospitable conditions on Venus would not give people a chance to live there. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He firmly believes that the ideas presented in the passage are skeptical because scientists can make a station far away from the surface that may provide all life conditions.
To begin with, the author claims that atmospheric pressure at Venus' surface is not compatible with the human being. It is said that all spacecraft have landed on Venus have been crushed by pressure within an hour of landing, which meant humans might be crushed too. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that pressure is much lower on another side of Venus and almost equal with Earths' pressure. Additionally, he mentions that people can live in this place without any damage.
Secondly, the writer suggests that on Venus' surface, it is almost impossible to find reservoirs of water because all places are surrounded by chemicals. Even people cannot bring water supplies to Venus from Earth. The lecturer, however, refutes this by mentioning that gases that are located on the surface of Venus can be used to produce water. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that they contain some chemicals which can create a stream and with this action, people may not import water from Earth.
Finally, the author posits that very little sunlight reaches the planet's surface and 40 percent of it can get through the clouds because it is reflected back into space. It is stated that the deficiency of light would avert the use of solar power cells, which might create severe problems and a huge part of light might be prevented by clouds. In contrast, the lecturer thinks that people can use the energy of the Sun and reflected light at the same time. He notes that they can easily collect energy and live there comfortably.
