Recently published figures show that the wildlife population around the world has decreased by around fifty per cent over the last fifty years. What can we do to help protect the wildlife round the world?
The planet is in crises like never before as the wildlife population around the world has decreased by a staggering fifty percent over the past five decades. This essay examines possible reasons for how we have collectively progressed to this bleak situation.
The United Nations has outlined 17 Sustainable goal strategies (SDGs) with SDG 11 focused around over consumption and production. Apart from many others, this may be identified as the root problem for the dwindling wildlife population as over poaching of wildlife has fuelled the luxury goods (furs and ivory), alternative eastern therapy medication ( bones used in preparation) & cosmetic industries ( animal plasma used as key active ingredient). Excessive aspirational wildlife tourism has also contributed to upsetting wildlife habitat.
Governments are privy to this degradation of wildlife populations but the greed of economic growth in the name of development and progress have allowed this to progress unhindered. There is a strong need for strong global intervention in terms of mandatory policy to curb and protect products and services that fully depend on wild life especially the endangered species which could completely get wiped out of this planet.
I do believe the UN SDGs should lead the mission by getting the top 100 countries in the world to commit to wildlife preservation charter or be faced with economic sanctions in trade. With a strong economic developmental mindset, linking sanctions to positive action is only way countries will unfortunately comply with the need of the hour.
This is a wake-up call for all humanity if we need to preserve the bio-diversity for generations to come.
