Tidal Power_integrated task
The reading and the lecture are both about the usage of tidal power as an alternate energy resource to many non-renewable resources. The author of the reading states that the tidal power is sustainable and safe way of generating electricity. The lecturer, however, challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that there are many drawbacsks which should be considered while talking about tidal energy.
To begin with, the author argues that it can be possible to generate four periods of energy everday with the use of both high and low tides. The article mentions that this generated electricity can be a supplement to the other sources. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that only a fraction of energy can be produced in this way since there are no much favourable locations available. Additionally, she says, while this fraction can be used to satisfy needs of few regions but it is nearly very small amount when compared to the actual electricy we need.
Secondly, the author suggests that tidal energy is environmental friendly. In the article, it is said that tidal energy is non-polluting and releases no greenhosue gases. These may be true to some extent but there are many other environmental effects caused by using tidal energy and were mentioned in the lecture. The lecturer elaborates on this by bringing up the points that tidal energy can effect wild life areas, increase salinity and disturb acqua-life, block the fish that migrates from fresh water to salt water.
Finally, the author posits that there aremany advantages of using tidal energy and can be a potential replacement to other sources. In contrast, the lecturer postion is that tidal energy can cause economical loss to many people who live on seas. He notes that the poeple who use fishing boats for earning their living can no longer navigate to river estuary to find fishes.
In conclusion, the lecture mentions the many important drawbacks of tidal energy that are failed to menyion
