The author cites three reasons scientists have found to explain the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period, a million years ago, in the reading material. Nevertheless, the lecturer argues that the reading material's reasons are not convincing explanations and opposes them accordingly.
First and foremost, the author claims that sea levels fell rained the habitats of some animals living in the shallow seas or coastal areas at the end of the Triassic period, which may have caused the mass-extinction since it changed the food chain. However, the lecturer offers the opposite idea that though sea levels were indeed fluctuating, it happened quite gradually, and animal species living in that habitats could adapt to the new conditions.
Besides, the lecturer cast doubt on the author's other reason that rising volcanic activities increased the amounts of sulfur dioxide and caused global cooling. The lecturer demonstrates that sulfur dioxide presents for a few years in Earth's atmosphere, but it can combine with water and become rain. Consequently, the sulfur dioxide leaves the air, so it is impossible to stay long enough in the atmosphere and cause an apparent temperature drop.
Finally, the author's third reason that asteroids fell into Earth's surface might damage (like blocking sunlight for months and years, which might lead to the extinction of several flora and fauna species) it strictly is also counteracted by the lecturer. The lecturer posits that there is no asteroid crater found related to that time. Meanwhile, the only asteroid crater found is related to 20 million years before the extinction, so it cannot be the cause.
