Summarize the reading and listening passage

Essay topics:

Summarize the reading and listening passage.

The reading and listening passage both discuss the truthfulness of Chevalier de Seingalt's memoir.

First, the reading passage states that Chevalier made up numerous instances in his memoir. The passage supports this by stating an example of how Chevalier once asked for a huge amount of money from a merchant in Switzerland. They conclude by this action that if a person is wealthy, he need not take money from someone else. In the listening passage, the lecturer contradicts this point by stating a fact about how in Switzerland it takes some time to get money once you sell your assets. The lecturer states that this doesn't by anyway prove that Chevalier was poor.

Second, the reading passage discusses the validity of the conversations mentioned in the memoir by saying that no individual has a memory of gathering exact details of a talk. However, the lecturer dismisses this point by bringing up Chevalier's notes which he wrote every night for several years. He further strengthens his point by speaking about the witnesses who saw Chevalier use his notes while writing the memoir.

Third, the reading passage discusses how the critics were not satisfied with Chevalier's escape as they thought that his close acquaintances had connections that could've made Chevalier's freeing from the jail a success. The listening passage contradicts by mentioning how the other jailers had greater connections but still were serving their time in prison. The lecturer further pints out about the seal which had to be repaired after Chevalier's escape which proves that the actual event actually occured and was not made up.

To sum up, this is how the listening passage opposes the points made in the reading text.
