ecotourism
The reading and the lecturer are both about eco-tourism. The author of the reading mentions that there are three positive sides of the eco-tourism. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article by explaining the reasons why Eco-Tourism is not a completely good thing.
To begin with, the author points out that Eco-Tourism serves as a substitute for forms of development, such as logging, farming, and manufacturing. Moreover, the writer mentioned that these forms could be a better alternative that causes less damage to the environment. The professor contradicts this point by saying that even if eco-tourism is a better alternative, still is not entirely effective. The professor points out that eco-tourism will need infrastructure, especially for building roads. Also, the professor explains this point by saying that it will have a negative consequence on the environment, which will cause more air and water pollution.
The second point that the author addresses is what would happen if the government decides to encourage eco-tourism. The writer elaborates on this by saying if government decides to focus on eco-tourism, more tourists will arrive, and it will increase the revenue for that place. Also, the author mentioned that eco-tourism will provide more jobs for local people, and consequently, they will have better conditions of life. One point the professor agrees with is that revenue will benefit local people, and it will create more jobs. On the other hand, the professor points out that these jobs will be the lowest paying, and it could create cultural pollution.
Finally, the author posits that if tourism increases, then the government will use their funds in order to protect the area. The professor refutes this point by saying that even if the place is protected, it cannot prevent illegal activities for occurring, such as hunting animals, stealing resources, and cutting down trees.
In conclusion, the author thinks that eco-tourism is a good idea because it will cause less damage to the environment. Also, he thinks that it will benefit all parts. In contrast, the professor agrees that eco-tourism is a better alternative than tourism, but also thinks it is not the perfect solution.
