The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americas in two of the years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The charts illustrate some sets of data relating to marriage in America during the 30-year period, from 1970 to 2000.
As seen from the first chart, the number of marriages remained stable in the first ten years, but then slightly fell from 2.5 millions to 2 millions in 2000. There were, however, some fluctuations in divorce rates. Between 1970 and 1980, there was a slight increase of nearly 0.5 millions; but that figure began to drop during the following years, finally reaching 1 million in 2000, equal to that in the beginning. But generally, the marriage rate was always higher than that of divorce.
The second chart offers a more accurate insight into the different marital status of adult Americans. Being married was the dominant one throughout the whole period, even though it underwent a slight decrease of over 10 percent. Widowed adults also declined a little bit, while people who were divorced and never married tend to grow more over the years.
