The table shows the amount of native speakers of six languages and the number of speakers of these languages as an additional language.
Overall, it is evident that the total number of speakers of Mandarin Chinese is much higher than others with over a billion speakers, even though, more than a half billion people speak English as an additional language.
Turning to details, quite large amount of people speak Mandarin Chinese as a native language (900 million) and as an additional language (190 million), making it the most popular in terms of number of speakers. Whereas, English is the most common language among non-English people with 603 million speakers, only about a half of this amount of people speak English as a native language. Native speakers of Hindi and Spanish are similar in number with 370 million and 350 million respectively, although number of speakers of Hindi as an additional language (120 million) is almost twice higher than speakers of Spanish (70 million). Similarly, the number of native speakers of Arabic is roughly equal to number of native speakers of Portuguese. When it comes to the number of speakers of these two languages as an additional language, these numbers are noticeably less in comparison to other, being 24 million for Arabic and 10 million for Portuguese.
