Increased of the sea levels
The reading claimed that the rise of sea levels is nothing to be panic about because it is a process that has happened before. Meanwhile, the lecturer opposed it and stated that there is clear evidence without any doubt that the sea level is increasing drastically due to human activities leading to an uncertain future if any action is taken.
According to the reading, polar ice melting is not the major factor in the rise of sea levels. There would not be a drastic change if the ice caps meltdown because 90% is part of the water. The lecturer stated that the melting of ice caps is not taken into account when it comes to studies about the increase of sea levels, however, it causes other problems. Moreover, one of the major concerns is the permafrost which is ice sitting in the land that never melts. When the permafrost unfreezes, the water added is added to the ocean and the increase of sea level occurs.
Furthermore, the reading held that there is still unknown where the additional water comes from, and also claimed that some agencies like NASA have stated that there are uncertainties about this phenomenon as well. The lecturer mentioned that NASA had stated that the rise of sea level is unclear. However, NASA has shown doubtless evidence that the melting of permafrost is constantly swallowing more land. Moreover, the water that is frozen in the permafrost has been underestimated. That is why the extra water is unknown.
The reading stated that episodes of the sea levels have happened ever since the continents emerged and humanity will have enough time to adjust because it will occur at a slow and gradual pace. The lecturer said that the reason why the ice is melting is due to human activity which has increased the hit of the atmosphere, accelerating the pace of ice melting a hundred times faster than it normally would. Furthermore, if humans do not act now, there would be a dramatic change affecting the economy and population.
