The charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pie charts highlight data about water consumption for three different purposes in different parts of the world.
Overall, it can be seen that water is mainly used in the agriculture sector in most of these areas, while domestic use is of a relatively small proportion.
Regarding North America and Europe, around half of water consumption in these two areas are for industrial purposes, taking up 48 and 53 percent respectively. Both also record the lowest figures in domestic use, while those of agriculture are about two to three times higher.
In the other parts of the world, most of the water is utilized for irrigation. Africa, Central Asia and South East Asia all use over 80 percent of water for agricultural purposes; while the figure for South America is 71 percent. The percentage in domestic use is usually a bit higher than in industrial use, with a gap ranging from 2 to 9 percent. However, the opposite is true in South East Asia, at 12% for industrial use and 7% for domestic use.
